History
The history of North America is long and complex, beginning with Indigenous peoples who settled the continent thousands of years ago. Indigenous nations and cultures included the Navajo, Hopi, Apache, Cherokee, Iroquois, Sioux and many others. These peoples developed distinct cultures, languages and traditions and maintained extensive networks of trade, alliances and conflict.
One of the earliest known European voyages to North America was made by the Norse explorer Leif Erikson around the year 1000, reaching the area of present-day Newfoundland. During the 15th and 16th centuries, European powers including Spain, France and England increasingly explored and colonised parts of the continent.
English colonies along the east coast, including Virginia and Massachusetts, became some of the earliest permanent English settlements. The colonial period was marked by conflicts with Indigenous peoples, religious disputes and political tensions. In the late 18th century, growing economic and political tensions between the British colonies and Great Britain led to the American Revolution and the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776.
During the 19th century, the United States expanded westward and gained territories that had previously been part of Mexico, including California and large parts of the southwest. Disputes over slavery contributed to the American Civil War, which ended in 1865 and was followed by the abolition of slavery.
In the 20th century, the United States played a major role in both world wars and became a leading economic and political power. The civil rights movement and other social movements brought significant changes to American society during the 20th century. In recent decades, North America has continued to experience demographic and cultural change and remains an important region in the global economy and international politics.
